Winter: cold, snow and the underground city

Montreal winter is real: weeks below zero, sometimes -20 °C, and plenty of snow. But the city is built for it. The RÉSO, the underground city, links metros, offices and malls over kilometres, out of the cold. You skate, you ski on Mount Royal, and you quickly learn to dress in layers. A good coat changes everything.

Summer and fall: terraces and festivals

From June to September, Montreal transforms: terraces everywhere, the Jazz Festival, Osheaga, Just for Laughs, fireworks. The shorter fall brings the colours of Mount Royal and the Laurentians an hour away. It’s many Montrealers’ favourite season.

Cost of living and language

Montreal remains markedly more affordable than Toronto or Vancouver, especially for housing. French is the common language and an everyday asset: a few classes and some practice open doors, even though you can live in English in several neighbourhoods.
